Plan III (Art History)

The major in art history prepares students for the humanities discipline and for the museum field. Coursework begins with an introduction to a wide range of art from diverse cultures and historical periods. Critical and historical methodology, interpretative practices, and philosophical principles comprise the foundation of the inquiry into visual culture, encompassing issues of identity and social and political concepts. In the practice of looking, talking, and writing, students learn to apply formalist observation and contextual analysis to their scholarly research as well as to the work of curating exhibitions.
